The Lehigh Valley’s distribution sector is booming, with massive new facilities employing thousands of workers arrayed along the region’s busiest highways and in its major industrial parks.
Wal-Mart, FedEx, Amazon, some of the largest logistics firms in the U.S. are opening massive distribution hubs in the region, capitalizing on its robust highway network and proximity to major markets in New York, Philadelphia and Washington.
For workers without a college degree, the jobs offer decent, if not generous, wages that have been buoyed recently by a slight labor shortage, said Don Cunningham, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp.
But are those jobs on borrowed time?
Experts say in as soon as five years from now, advances in robotics and artificial intelligence will start replacing many of the human hands and feet that currently fill your online purchase orders.
